With crime novels, what I as a reader particularly enjoy is reading the environment outside of the plot – issues like class, race, culture, and their reflection in the objects surrounding the plot and characters. But the case of Anne Katherine Green is interesting. If there’s no genre conventions to use and work with, sometimes there’s a bit of Victorian shapelessness to some books, excuse my frank language. In my experience, many of these “precursor” novels are interesting, often better literature than their more generic offspring, but also sometimes more dull, less concentrated and shaped. This book’s portly detective, who breaks his case by inviting all suspects into a room and explaining the facts of the case to them is clearly what Christie based her chubby Belgian detective Poirot on. Michael Sims’s introduction makes clear how much writers like Arthur Conan Doyle and especially Agatha Christie owe to Green’s work and to her 1878 debut novel The Leavenworth Case in particular. Green, Anne Katharine (2010 ), The Leavenworth Case, PenguinĪnne Katherine Green is widely seen as a precursor to modern mystery novels – or one of the first modern mystery novels, depending on how you want to judge eras.

("Human nature is much the same everywhere, I find.") This makes her the Trope Codifier for Little Old Lady Investigates. The kicker is that this wisdom is derived entirely from her observation of one village's life confronted with a horrific murder, she invariably can draw the 'village parallel' between the suspects' behaviour and some random schoolboy prank or irregularity with the church funds. Her gently ultra-conventional exterior hides a keen perception and wide-ranging understanding of human nature from which she gains insight that lets her proceed where the official detectives are baffled. Miss Jane Marple is a little old spinster lady living in the English village of St Mary Mead, with an occasional tendency to stumble into murder mysteries. In all, she appeared in 12 novels and 24 short stories. She made her first appearance in the short story " The Tuesday Night Club" in 1927, and first featured in a novel in 1930, with The Murder at the Vicarage. She was second to Poirot both chronologically, making her debut seven years after him, and in the affections of the public, but it is reported that of the two of them Christie herself much preferred Miss Marple. Miss Marple is, after Hercule Poirot, the second of Agatha Christie's big two detective characters. Items in order will be sent via Express post as soon as they arrive in the warehouse.
